Our visit

Trenchers Bowness is a major new fish and chip restaurant and takeaway on Rectory Road, beside Bowness Bay and the Windermere Lake Cruises coach park. It officially opened on 11 July 2026, becoming the first Trenchers location in Cumbria and one of the most significant new food openings in Bowness-on-Windermere this year. 
 
The Trenchers name dates back to the original Whitby restaurant, established in 1980. The wider brand has collected major national recognition for its restaurants and takeaways, but the Bowness branch is a new venue and should be judged on its own service and food as it settles into its first season. 
 
The menu is led by traditional fish and chips, freshly cooked seafood and familiar British favourites. Published opening information also highlights dishes such as prawn cocktail, Greek salad, fish pie, house burgers and desserts including cheesecake, chocolate fudge cake and sticky toffee pudding. A dedicated Little Skippers menu is available for younger diners. 
 
Trenchers traditionally cooks its standard fish and chips using beef dripping and English potatoes. The Bowness menu also advertises vegetarian choices, vegan burgers and sausages, and gluten-free fish and chips on request. Guests with allergies, intolerances or strict dietary requirements should speak to the restaurant before ordering so ingredients, cooking methods and cross-contamination risks can be checked against the current menu. 
 
The venue combines a 100-seat restaurant with a takeaway service. Tables can be reserved online through the official booking partner, while takeaway customers can order during the regular service period. The restaurant also welcomes families, larger groups and coach parties, making it a practical choice for visitors arriving at Bowness Pier or combining lunch with a Windermere cruise. 
 
Regular published opening is seven days a week from 11.30am until 9pm for both the restaurant and takeaway. Online reservation slots may finish earlier than the venue's full opening time, and seasonal, holiday or operational changes are possible, so check the official website or booking page before making a special journey. 
 
Accessibility information lists a step-free entrance, single-level access to the main areas and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Free Wi-Fi, baby-changing facilities and table service are also advertised. Dogs are accepted, although guests should confirm where dogs can sit when reserving a restaurant table. 
 
The restaurant is close to Bowness Pier, Windermere Lake Cruises and the lakeside promenade. Nearby public parking is charged and can become very busy during weekends, school holidays and major events, so visitors should allow extra time or use local bus and boat services where practical.
