Millom Leisure Centre

<p><strong>Millom Leisure Centre is a major new sports, fitness and wellbeing facility being built on Salthouse Road in Millom.</strong> The centre is part of the Millom Town Deal's Activating Community Health project and is being delivered by Cumberland Council.</p>

<p><strong>The centre is not yet open.</strong> Cumberland Council's latest September 2026 information says the leisure centre is set to open in 2026, but an exact public opening date has not yet been announced. Do not make a special journey expecting to use the new indoor facilities until the operator confirms that they have opened.</p>

<h2>What will Millom Leisure Centre have?</h2>

<p>The completed centre is planned to include a <strong>swimming pool, gym, fitness studio and multi-purpose sports hall</strong>. It will sit alongside outdoor sports provision that has already been developed at the site, including a 3G all-weather pitch, floodlit running track and World Athletics-standard long-jump facility.</p>

<p>The project is intended to be more than a conventional gym and pool. Cumberland Council has been working with health organisations on ways the building could support community wellbeing, including social prescribing, healthy-lifestyle programmes and the potential for some health services to be delivered from the site.</p>

<h2>Who will run Millom Leisure Centre?</h2>

<p><strong>Everyone Active</strong> has been appointed to operate Millom Leisure Centre for Cumberland Council. The operator began running seven other council leisure facilities in west Cumberland in April 2026 as part of a ten-year contract and is developing the programme for Millom ahead of opening.</p>

<p>Opening hours, swimming timetables, gym memberships, classes, casual-use prices and booking arrangements have not yet been confirmed for the new centre. Cumbria Guru will update this page when Everyone Active publishes the final visitor information.</p>

<h2>When will Millom Leisure Centre open?</h2>

<p>The current confirmed position is <strong>2026</strong>. In May, Cumberland Council said works would be completed by autumn and that the centre was expected to welcome users by the end of the year. A more recent council update in September again described both the leisure centre and The Old Bank project as set to open this year.</p>

<p>Because no exact opening day has been published, Cumbria Guru is deliberately not presenting an estimated date as confirmed.</p>

<h2>Construction progress</h2>

<p>By May 2026 the new building had reached an advanced stage. Cumberland Council reported that wall cladding was close to completion and roofing works were in their final stages. The swimming pool had completed testing and passed inspection, while work continued in the pool and plant areas, changing rooms and sports hall.</p>

<p>Work has continued around the wider site, including access and pedestrian improvements from Salthouse Road. Planning approval has also been granted for a new maintenance access road, disabled parking and improvements to pedestrian and cycle routes between Salthouse Road and the community leisure centre.</p>

<h2>Why is the new centre being built?</h2>

<p>Millom Leisure Centre forms part of <strong>Activating Community Health</strong>, one of four projects within the wider Millom Town Deal. The Town Deal programme secured £20.6 million of government investment alongside £8.7 million in match funding across its projects.</p>

<p>Specific support for the leisure project includes £1 million from Copeland Community Fund and a £3.1 million Nuclear Decommissioning Authority grant, with additional funding from South Copeland GDF Community Partnership, CGP, Millom School and Millom Town Council.</p>

<h2>The name Millom Leisure Centre</h2>

<p>The final name was chosen by the local community in spring 2026. A total of 931 votes were cast, with <strong>Millom Leisure Centre</strong> receiving 416 votes ahead of Millom Sports Village and The Salthouse Centre.</p>

<h2>Getting there</h2>

<p>The development is on <strong>Salthouse Road, Millom, LA18 5AB</strong>, beside Millom School and the existing sports facilities. Millom railway station is in the town centre on the Cumbrian Coast Line.</p>

<p>Final parking arrangements, accessible parking, entrance arrangements and public transport guidance for the completed centre should be checked once Everyone Active publishes its opening information.</p>

<h2>Before you travel</h2>

<p><strong>Millom Leisure Centre is still a coming-soon facility.</strong> The outdoor sports facilities around the site may have their own availability, but that does not mean the new indoor leisure centre is open. Check the latest Cumberland Council and Everyone Active information before travelling specifically to swim, use the gym or attend a class.</p>
