Greystoke Castle

<p><strong>Greystoke Castle is a historic family estate in the village of Greystoke, west of Penrith.</strong> It is becoming a more active visitor venue, with guided castle visits, grounds access, afternoon tea, a café and a programme of public events.</p>

<p>It should not be treated like a large attraction with identical access every day. Castle interiors, grounds, food and events use separate booking arrangements and opening patterns. Check the exact product before travelling.</p>

<h2>Castle history</h2>
<p>The estate's story reaches back to the medieval Greystoke family. The building has been altered repeatedly rather than surviving as one untouched period castle. It was damaged during the 17th century, substantially rebuilt and enlarged in the 1840s with architect Anthony Salvin, and badly damaged again by fire in 1868 before reconstruction.</p>

<p>The estate was requisitioned during the Second World War. The grounds were used for military training and the castle later housed prisoners of war. Restoration and modernisation continued after the property returned to the family.</p>

<p>Greystoke also has a playful literary link with Tarzan: the fictional Lord Greystoke title made the name famous, although the character and jungle upbringing are not part of the real family history.</p>

<p>Guided tours are the clearest way to see the interior and hear the building's layered history. The official visitor page lists castle tours seven days a week during the summer season, but does not publish one universal daily departure time on that page. <h2>Castle grounds and Tarzan Trail</h2>
<p>The grounds include mature trees, parkland and a route described by the castle as the Tarzan Trail, leading towards Castle Lake. Visitors may also see the estate's resident peacocks. The walk adds a relaxed outdoor element to a history visit, but surfaces and seasonal conditions should be checked if mobility is limited.</p>

<p>Dogs are welcomed in the grounds under the castle's current visitor promotion. Keep them controlled around wildlife, other visitors and event displays, and check whether dogs can enter any booked indoor element.</p>

<h2>Afternoon tea and Carriage Works</h2>
<p>The official summer information lists afternoon tea daily from noon to 4pm. The Carriage Works advertises breakfast from 9am to 1pm and lunch from 1pm to 4pm. Food hours can change for events or private functions, so book where the visit depends on a meal.</p>

<h2>Events</h2>
<p>Greystoke Castle hosts music, theatre, comedy, car shows and other public dates. An event ticket does not necessarily include a standard guided castle tour, and a free event can still have capacity, parking or area restrictions.</p>
