A small but serious gallery with a national-level eye for modern British art, housed in one of Cockermouth's most atmospheric Georgian settings.
<p>Castlegate House Gallery is one of Cockermouth's strongest cultural stops. Housed in an unspoilt Georgian building close to the castle, the gallery specialises in twentieth-century and contemporary British art. Its programme combines recognised names with carefully selected contemporary artists, while studio ceramics are also an important part of the collection.</p><p>The historic rooms give the work a domestic setting rather than the feel of a conventional white-box gallery, which makes browsing particularly enjoyable. Exhibitions change through the year and the gallery regularly brings new work into the building, so repeat visits can feel very different.</p><p>Regular public opening is concentrated later in the week, with some other days available by appointment.
