Carnegie Theatre & Arts Centre
A characterful local theatre with a surprisingly varied programme and a strong community feel. It is a good choice for an affordable night out in Workington, but check each event's seating layout, age guidance and access arrangements before booking.
The Carnegie Theatre & Arts Centre is one of Workington's best-loved cultural buildings. Its traditional proscenium-arch theatre hosts touring music, comedy, dance, family entertainment, tribute shows, talks and productions by local theatre groups.
The main auditorium seats 306 people and retains the character of a classic town theatre. Performances vary from fully seated theatre shows to selected live music events with restricted or flexible seating, so check the individual event listing before booking.
The building began life as a public library and lecture hall funded by Andrew Carnegie. It opened in 1904, later became an arts centre and was designated Grade II listed in 1985. Today it is operated by the Carnegie Theatre Trust as a charitable community venue.
There is more to the Carnegie than the main stage. Cafe Carnegie serves breakfast, lunch, drinks and cakes from Monday to Saturday, with evening service before selected performances. The building also includes Monroe's Bar, studio and meeting spaces, community classes and an active music centre.
Wheelchair spaces are limited and should be arranged through the box office when booking. The venue has an accessible toilet, welcomes assistant dogs and can provide an induction loop for selected performances when requested in advance.
The Carnegie does not operate its own public car park. On-street parking is free after 6pm, while the Vulcans Lane pay-and-display car park is around one minute away. Workington bus station is approximately three minutes away on foot and the railway station is around an eight-minute walk.
Cafe Carnegie generally opens from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Saturday, with food served until 2pm. The box office normally opens from 10am to 3pm on the same days. Event doors and evening opening times vary, so check your booking before travelling.
