Carlisle Library
The £3.3m refurbishment has made Carlisle Library much more useful as a free city-centre stop. It now works for families, studying, digital access, community activity and local-history research, not just borrowing books.
Carlisle Library is the city's main public library and Digital Community Hub on Globe Lane. It reopened on 4 August 2026 following a £3.3 million transformation funded through the UK Government's Carlisle Town Deal with additional investment from Cumberland Council.<br>

The project has changed the library from a conventional book-borrowing space into a broader learning, digital and community hub while retaining its core library services. Hundreds of residents visited during the first week after reopening, using the new facilities and taking part in a programme of family and community activities.<br>

The refurbished building includes a dedicated children's area, adult-learning classrooms, improved study facilities, flexible spaces for community organisations, charging points, private study desks and better access to digital resources. The adult-learning rooms are intended for digital-literacy courses, practical workshops and wider skills development.<br>

Around £1.1 million of the overall investment was spent on mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Cumberland Council says this included improvements to heating and hot-water systems, lighting, fire safety, security, access controls, data networks and specialist building systems.<br>

The library continues to house the Jackson Collection, one of its most important heritage resources. The collection contains thousands of rare and historic items, including material dating back to the 1600s, giving local-history researchers another reason to use the building beyond its general lending service.<br>

Regular library services include computer access, printing, photocopying, local studies, loanable story sacks, dementia bags and hearing-aid batteries. Bus-pass applications are also handled Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm, with proof of identification required under the current council guidance.<br>

Current official opening hours are Monday 9am to 5.30pm, Tuesday 10am to 5.30pm, Wednesday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm. The library is closed on Sundays and bank holidays.<br>

Carlisle Library is inside The Lanes shopping-centre area on Globe Lane. The council specifically points visitors towards The Lanes car park, while regular buses serve the shopping centre. Carlisle railway station is approximately a ten-minute walk away.<br>

The building has disabled access. Visitors who need specific assistance, accessible computer provision or support using the refurbished facilities should contact the library service before travelling if their requirement is essential.<br>
